Mannis, capital of Mannismurk, is not much to look at. As the largest city in Mannismurk, its growth has been checked by the surrounding marshlands, making buildings of stone sink into the swamp. The only stone building in Mannis was erected at tremendous expense by the Church of the Lady after sinking several times, a vast cathedral that rises above all of the mud, wood, and thatch buildings.
Mannis’ only defining boundary is a palisade of mud brick and wood holding back the encroachment of the swamp. The city itself has been drained by canals that run the length and breadth of the city, effectively separating it into four quarters. The King of Mannismurk lives in a connected series of buildings in the old quarter, what would be called a hovel by the other nations.
Only a few things keep Mannismurk as a sovereign nation. Cirgun’s infighting and lack of an established government beyond noble houses, a lack of valuable materials in Mannismurk, as well as the mud flats that cover the region, making much of it nigh-impassable for armies.
